Bruce Hamilton Rivers passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Cheraw Healthcare in Cheraw, SC. He was 94.
Born in Chesterfield County on September 1, 1923 to John Ray and Rosa (White) Rivers. Bruce served in the US Army in the 1940’s and was a World War II Veteran. In his early years he worked in textiles at Cheraw Cotton Mill and Delta Mills. Later he worked at Camp Coker in Society Hill, SC and with the SC Forestry Commission. He also worked as the Superintendent at Camp Pee Dee in Bennettsville, SC for 24 years. After retiring, he and His wife Virginia opened and operated Southern Oaks Restaurant in Bennettsville. Bruce was also a devoted member of Smyrna United Methodist Church and dearly loved his church family. He was known for his faith, his humor, his love for his family, and his love of fishing.
Surviving are his wife Virginia M. Rivers of Bennettsville; his sons Eddie Rivers (Brenda) of Bennettsville and Jerry Rivers (Myra) of Dillon; his daughters Susan Gaskins (Brady Herndon) of Wallace, Helen Tindal (Kenny) of Conway, and Sharon Miles (Dennis) of Florence; his sister Madge Knutson, Jacksonville, FL; his 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; his many nieces, nephews and friends; and his special 4-legged child Meme.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, his son Charles Ray Rivers, his brother William Rivers, his sisters Doris Mixson and Beatrice Dempsey.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Camp Pee Dee Chapel Fellowship Hall. A visitation will be held from 1-2 pm just prior to the service.
