Mr. Lawrence Dunn Hagan, Jr., 88, passed away June 3, 2017 at his residence in Bennettsville surrounded by his family.
Born May 12, 1929 in Due West, SC, he was a son of the late Lawrence D. Hagan, Sr. and Ruth Martin Hagan. He grew up in Greenwood, SC, where his father was the Business Manager for Lander College. He graduated from Greenwood High School and then from Clemson College in 1952 with a degree in Textile Manufacturing. He was commissioned in the US Army as a Second Lt. and served two years in the Korean Conflict retiring as First Lt. After his military service he and his family moved to Johnston SC, where he was employed as Industrial Engineer for Deering Milliken. In 1957 he moved to Bennettsville SC and was employed by Mohawk Carpet for 33 years retiring as Plant Superintendent. After retirement he worked part time for Ken Pittman at Riverdale Fibers in Dillon.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bennettsville. He was a member of the Clemson Alumni, IPTAY member, Golden Tiger, past president of Marlboro and Clio Country Clubs, and a member of the Bennettsville Cotillion Club.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis Murff Hagan of Bennettsville; sons, Lawrence “Sonny” Hagan, III and wife Betty of Bennettsville, James Ross Hagan and wife Sue of Willow Spring, NC and Phillip Marshall Hagan and wife Julie of Aiken, SC; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Marian) Nichols; and a brother, Col. James Martin Hagan.
A Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Burroughs and Cooper Funeral Home, burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park with Military Honors. A visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the funeral home.
