Michael Sundy “Bean” Winburn was called Home on December 25, 2017 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Born on January 25, 1948, the son of C.S. and Kathleen Winburn, Michael was raised in Patrick, South Carolina. He attended schools in nearby Cheraw. He graduated from Clemson University in 1970, with a BA in Economics followed by an MBA at Appalachian State University. Michael enjoyed a successful career, culminating with his calling, serving as the Executive Director of the Disabilities and Special Needs Board of Marlboro County. Helping and serving others was his passion.
Bean will best be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, “Beanie,” brother, friend and a true Clemson gentleman, who followed his beloved Tigers every step of the way.
He made everyone around him feel love, whether a friend, relative or just a stranger in the elevator. He was always the coolest guy in the room and a true renaissance man. He dedicated his life to serving his Lord, his family and his community. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Marlboro County General Hospital, a private foundation. He was also on the Board of Directors for The Kinney Foundation. A devout Anglican, he joined St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cheraw in 1976. After moving to Bennettsville, he became an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served in many leadership roles for over 30 years. Bean shared his faith and touched many lives through the Cursillo movement in the Diocese of South Carolina and through Faith Alive. He endeared himself to everyone he met.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Bonnie, “Miss Worm” as he lovingly called her, two sons, Andrew Sundy (Heather) of Mount Pleasant, SC and Edward Scott (Lara) of Columbia, SC. and three grandchildren Mayzie, Gus, and Kit Winburn of Columbia; brother, Ronnie Winburn (Pat) of Charlotte, NC; nephews, John and Adam Winburn of Charlotte, NC.
