Shirley Ann Akers, of Clio, S.C., 81, died Thursday, August 31 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C. following an illness.

Shirley was born Dec. 5, 1935, in Dillon County, S.C., the daughter of James Wilson and Thelma Lee Jones.  She was the devoted wife of the late Bruce Akers for 62 years.  She worked as administrative assistant at Clio Farm Equipment Co. for many years but her passion, working with her husband, was the operation of the Clio Country Club.  As a long-time member of the Clio Baptist Church, Shirley was active in church programs and especially loved singing in the choir.

Surviving are: Daughter Lisa (Bill) Bartlett of Rocky Mount, N.C., sons Daniel Akers of Hartsville, S.C. and Steve Akers of Clio, S.C., granddaughters Amanda Brooke Freeman of Greenville, N.C. and Kathy (Scott) Eikenberry of Deerfield, Illinois, brothers LeGrand Jones and Arthur Jones, sisters Lucille Fowler, Grace Calhoun, Rachael Jones, Adrienne Stewart and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 3, 2017, at McLucas Cemetery in Clio at 5:00 p.m. The family will be receiving friends from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Burroughs Funeral Home in Bennettsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Clio Baptist Church.
