Zachariah "Jay" Jordan Drake, Jr.November 7, 1936 ~ September 27, 2017 (age 80)
Zachariah “Jay” Jordan Drake passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Mcleod Health Cheraw. He was 80 years old.
Mr. Jay was born on November 7, 1936, in Bennettsville to the late Zachariah Jordan Drake, Sr. and Clara Catherine Chamness Drake. He grew up and attended school in the Blenheim area. He played varsity sports and was voted “Most Intellectual Senior Superlative” before graduating from Lower Marlboro High School in 1954.
He attended Presbyterian College where he studied business and was active in the Sigma Nu fraternity. He spent his summers working to help pay his college expenses and graduated in 1958 with a B.A. in Business Administration.
In 1958 Mr. Jay entered the US Army and served 6 months active duty at Fort Jackson, SC, followed by 5 ½ years in the Army Reserves.
He spent most of his career in the insurance field, serving in various managerial/supervisory positions. Outside of work, he was active in the East Columbia Jaycees and was awarded a lifetime membership in 1971. He also spent much time with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts organizations while his children were young.
While living in Bennettsville, Mr. Jay was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was still actively employed with Midgley Insurance & Real Estate, Inc. Mr. Jay never met a stranger. He loved talking with people and learning new things. He had a love of the beach and especially enjoyed shagging and learning new dance moves.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Catherine Drake Byers.
Mr. Jay is survived by his wife, Douglas Shaw Drake of Bennettsville; sons, Zachariah Jordan Drake, III of Red Bank, SC; Dwayne Lee Drake (Beth) of Greer; and Shawn Kyle Drake (Mary) of Columbia; grandchildren, Richard Jordan Drake, Rebecca Drake, Lauren Drake, Anastasia Drake, and Jess Bishop.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, followed by burial at Drake-Dudley Cemetery in Blenheim. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service at the church in the gathering room.
