Mary Weatherly Breeden Lee, of Bennettsville, age 86, died peacefully in her sleep on April 18, 2019 at FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care in Pinehurst, N.C. She was born on April 16, 1933. Mary was the youngest daughter of Eleanor McCants and Edward Walton Breeden. She graduated from Bennettsville High School in 1951 and attended Converse College and Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary. She married Jamie Fletcher Lee in December of 1954. After his graduation from the School of Law at the University of South Carolina, they moved home to Bennettsville. Mary worked for a number of years as his legal secretary. She was active in the Junior League and the San Souci Dance Club for many years. Her hobbies included knitting, cooking, working crossword puzzles, and reading, but she enjoyed time with family most of all. Mary loved summer vacations at Garden City, happy times spent at the Farm, and in later years, mountain trips to Valle Crucis.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of sixty-five years, the Honorable Jamie Fletcher Lee, and her three children, James Colin Lee (Lucy), Jamie Fletcher (Luke) Lee, Jr. (Jayne) and Mary Louise Lee. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jayne Rowe Townsend Corradi Lee Carpenter (Joshua), Fletcher Walton Lee, Carson Alexander Lee, Marguerite Murchison Breeden Lee, Mary Jane McCants Corradi Lee, Mary Elizabeth Lee Cornell (Chris), Furman Harrison Lee and great-granddaughter, Lewen Evers Lee Carpenter.
Mary, lovingly known as Mema, will always be remembered for her fun-loving spirit, kind heart, great sense of humor, and bright smile. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be held at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Bennettsville, S.C. at 4:00 P.M. on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019. The family will receive friends after the service at their home, 504 Lakeshore Drive, Bennettsville, SC 29512.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marlboro Civic Center, 106 Clyde Street, Bennettsville, SC 29512, or the Marian Wright Edelman Public Library of Marlboro County, 203 Fayetteville Avenue, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Mary sincerely loved going to the library. She had had a library card since she was six years old.
