Betty Elizabeth (Jones) Goldberg

April 17, 1932 ~ March 18, 2021 (age 88)

RUTH ELIZABETH "BETTY" JONES GOLDBERG of Bennettsville SC, age 88, died March 18, 2021, at her home surrounded by loving family. She was born April 17, 1932, in Avon Park FL, the daughter of the late Paul Richard Jones Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth Sample Jones of Haines City FL. Two brothers, Paul Richard Jones, Jr. and John Sample Jones, and a step-sister, Paula Tripp, all of Florida predeceased her. Betty graduated from Haines City High School and later attended the universities of Florida Southern and Florida State. In 1953, she married Edward Hammett Goldberg, III, a pilot in the United States Air Force. After getting out of the Air Force, they moved to Bennettsville. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and later became a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.

Betty was a unique individual surrounding herself more often than not with multiple friends and family members. She loved to socialize, play bridge, host dinner parties and was affectionately known for her annual Christmas Eve "ladies" party with crowds sometimes exceeding over 100 guests. Her family members joked that her prize possession was the telephone. She was a member of the Cotilion Dance Club, the San Souci Dance Club, the Garden Club, Junior League, and multiple bridge clubs. Also, she assisted at the Marlboro County Election polls for many years. She and Bumsy also enjoyed their many travels spanning across most of the United States.

Visiting family members in Florida several times a year brought many joyous memories to Betty and her family. Those trips always included driving through the family's orange groves and picking fresh oranges to be squeezed for fresh orange juice and plenty to take back to SC to share with friends. Betty's family was very ingrained into the Florida citrus exchange with Betty's grandfather, J.W. Sample, being one of the founding fathers of the Haines City Citrus Growers Association. Betty was affectionately known as the "Orange Queen."

Betty is survived by her loving husband, Edward Hammett "Bumsy" Goldberg of 68 years and her three children, Edward Hammett "Ed" Goldberg IV (Barbara), Laura Goldberg Lester (Lon) and Steven Richard Goldberg (Marisa). She is also survived by her seven beloved grandchildren, Edward Hammett "Vee" Goldberg V, Elizabeth Kaye Goldberg Dillon (Joey), Wyatt Harrison Lester (Mackenzie), Kensley Lester Carson (Ryan), Mary Catherine Goldberg Johnson (Matt), Jaycee Goldberg Cummings (Larry), Mary Steven Goldberg (Spencer) and five great-grandchildren Jason Harper Elliott, Sawyer Sutton Lester, Saylor Sullivan Lester, Olivia Grace Carson and Landon Cole Johnson.
