Obituary

Clio

Elaine Hailey Powers, of Clio, the loving wife of the late Delton W. Powers, Sr., died at home after a month-long battle with Covid-19, and the after-effects of this terrible disease.  She was born on April 10, 1927 in Manning, SC, but moved to Bennettsville with her parents at a young age. “Miss Elaine”, as she was known by so many, worked for many years in the family business known as Powers’ Superette.  The store was a fixture in the Clio community, and a place to go and socialize for locals.  So many people had their “supper planned” by Miss Elaine, it was a wonder that she knew what to feed her own family.  But feed she did, with wonderful meals, laughter around the table, and love and acceptance for all she met.  She lived an exemplary life of Christian service and love.  Her trademark saying to her own children was to “Be Pretty.”  And no matter what her situation, the answer was always “I’m fine!”  Miss Elaine led her life in such a positive fashion, with kindness and dignity to all.

Miss Elaine graduated from Bennettsville High School, at a young age worked at the local Belk’s store in Bennettsville.  She and her husband opened Powers’ Superette, a classic Mom and Pop grocery and butcher shop, and raised three children.  They enjoyed seven grandchildren at the time of his sudden death, which was 2 days after their 50th anniversary.  She lived on her own for 26 years after that, and spent her time not only taking care of and enjoying family; she lived to see those seven grandchildren bless her with 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.  She universally became “Grandma” to them all.  She loved them and they all adored her.  She spent her life helping and caring for others, even in her 90’s.  She was always helping and caring for the elderly in the community.  She was a pillar in the Clio First Baptist Church, and a member of the Cross Stitchers of Clio, a sewing group that sends crosses all over the world.

She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Blanche Hailey, a sister Barbara Hailey Hubbard, a brother Robert Hailey, Jr., and the love of her life, her husband.  They were the perfect example of love and how to live.  Their family and friends are blessed by that love and devotion.

She is survived by her three children, Raye Powers Edgerton (Mike), of Clio, SC; Judy Powers Thomas (Everett) of Fountain Inn, SC; and Delton Wright Powers, Jr., of Florence, SC.  Her grandchildren, Deanna Thomas, Brad Thomas, (Courtney). Michael Edgerton (Sarita), Suzanne Edgerton George, Hailey Powers Turnblad, Jillian Powers McLaurin (Eddie), and Stuart Powers.  She also enjoyed the love of 16 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  There also many friends and family members who will miss her smile, her warmth and her loving care.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM, Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at McLucas Cemetery in Clio, officiated by Rev. Brad Thomas.
