Mrs. Ethel Herndon Mercer, 97, passed away Christmas morning, Wednesday, December 25, 2019.
Mrs. Ethel was born in the Pleasant Hill area of Georgetown, SC, in 1922 to the late Samuel Isaac and Florence Bruorton Burroughs. Her family relocated from Georgetown to McColl, SC in the early 1930’s, leaving the farm life for a life in mercantile and textiles. She attended school in McColl and was active in basketball during her youth. She married Jack Moore Herndon in 1939. Jack passed away at an early age, leaving Mrs. Ethel to raise four children on her own. She moved to Bennettsville in 1971 and remarried to Howard Mercer in the early 70’s. She worked many jobs over the years, mostly in sales, and always as a top-notch salesperson. She was active in church, diligently paid her tithes, and relied on her faith to get her through. She always believed in taking great care of herself, maintaining her hair, makeup, and appropriate attire at all times. She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids, cooking from old recipes, and keeping up with politics on Fox News. She loved reading her Bible and going to church, singing hymns, and sharing her favorite scriptures with her family. She never missed an opportunity to plant a seed of faith. She was dearly loved and will always be remembered for her love of God and her family. Her death was a gain to heaven and an enormous loss to all she left behind. She will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, listed above; siblings, Clarence Burroughs, Lloyd Burroughs, Lonnie Burroughs, Alger Burroughs, Daisy Bell Burroughs, Lilly Burroughs Mauney, Elise Burroughs Jones, Mary Burroughs Tyndall, and Mildred Burroughs.
She is survived by sons, Jackie Ronald “Ronnie” Herndon (Harriet) and Warren Keith Herndon, both of Bennettsville; daughters, Judith Davis of Bennettsville, Susan Shirley (Steve) of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Angela Herndon-Hanna, Phillip Coonfield (Leslie), Erin Jordan, Amilee Bigham; great-grandchildren, Kersey Hanna, Alex and Jack Coonfield, Noah Rafaele, Madison Jordan; and other beloved nieces and nephews very dear to her heart.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2019 at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Dr. George Smith. Burial will follow at Rogers Cemetery in McColl. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. just prior to the service at the church.
