Kathryn Gunter Allen of Orlando, FL was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Following a brief illness Kathryn passed away peacefully in Clermont, FL on August 12, 2021, at the age of 92.
Kathryn was born December 17, 1928, in Birmingham, AL to Sidney Gunter and Ola Mae (Self) Gunter. She was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Edwin W. Allen, Jr. and by her brothers Sidney Gunter and Edwin Gunter.
Kathryn is survived by her son, Edwin Allen III, his wife Donna and their children Parker and Casey. She is also survived by her daughter Julie Heckman-Wood, Julie’s daughter Holly, her husband Gene and their children Tori, Grace, Lexi, and Mia and by Julie’s son Landon and his wife Gabrielle and son Noah Allen.
Kathryn was a lifelong member of the United Methodist church. She met Ed in Birmingham, AL and they fell in love immediately. Married shortly thereafter at Clio Baptist Church in Clio, SC they remained together for the rest of their lives. In part due to being a military spouse, Kathryn had the opportunity to live in Birmingham, AL; Ft. Jackson, SC; Ft. Benning, GA; Anchorage, AK; Wadesboro, NC; Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Falls Church, VA, Tokyo, Japan, Clio, SC; and Orlando, FL.
As a young woman, Kathryn played the accordion at The Alabama Theatre, proofread articles for Progressive Farmer Magazine, and worked as a teacher’s aide. She enjoyed travel, was an excellent seamstress and had a passion for singing. She sang in various church choirs for most of her life.
