Obituary

Port Royal, SC

Margaret Willis Spears passed peacefully away on April 6, 2020 at Helena Place Assisted Living in Port Royal, SC., where she had lived for last 2 years.

Formerly of Bennettsville, SC., she was a beautiful and loving 98 years young. She was born on August 31, 1921 in Washington, NC and grew up in St. Pauls, NC. She graduated from St. Pauls High School, where she was salutatorian.

She was married to the late Hamer Jones Spears of Clio and was preceded in death by her parents Nathaniel Preston and Pearl Fields Rozier Willis; sisters Mildred Webb and Eva Bruton; brothers Albert Willis and Preston Willis Jr.

After her husband retired from a 23-year career in the US Airforce, Margaret, with her family, moved to Marlboro county and became a part of the Clio and Hebron communities.  They settled into farm life and every year planted a large garden for freezing and canning.  She was a great cook, with her fried chicken and biscuits requested often by grandchildren and great grands. She was also known for her chocolate pound cake, which she made regularly for family and community events. After moving to Bennettsville from the country, she became an active member of the Senior Circle in Bennettsville, where she made many new friends and enjoyed playing dominoes, exercising and other activities.

As a longtime member of Hebron United Methodist, she worked on many church committees and taught youth Sunday School. After moving to the Carolinian in Florence, she enjoyed returning to visit her Hebron church family and they were always joyous to see her.

Left behind to cherish her memory; son Bob Spears (Leppy) of Libertyville, IL.; daughter Kathy Bradford (Barry Dickson) of Beaufort, SC; granddaughter Keitt Mobile (Dave) of Deltona, FL; grandsons Evans Spears (Karen) of Lubbock, TX and John Spears (Brian Dimit) of Colorado Springs, CO; great grandsons Kyle Mobile (Jenna) of Green Bay, WI and Caleb Mobile of New Smyrna Beach, FL; great granddaughter Christine Spears of Lubbock, TX.

A private graveside service will be held Thursday, April 9, 2020 at Hebron Cemetery. Due to the current situation, we respectfully ask that family and friends do not attend. In the future, we will be announcing a memorial service celebrating Margaret’s life. We look forward to seeing all of you then.
