Mary Alice (Chavis) Lanthier

February 11, 1941 ~ October 2, 2021 (age 80)

Obituary

Bennettsville, SC

Mary Alice Chavis Lanthier (80), died Saturday, October 2, 2021, surrounded by family at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born in Bennettsville, SC on a winter morning of February 11, 1941, she was the daughter of Tyson B. Chavis and Meloise Brigman Chavis of Bennettsville, SC who preceded her in death.  She was a retired manufacturer worker at United Technologies Plant (Essex) in Bennettsville, SC and waitress at Bennettsville and Wallace Motel’s Restaurants. In her later years after retirement, she raised and tended to many Chavistown community children in a home daycare and ran “Grandmas Store” out of her home so the kids would have a local place to get a soda pop or cake right around the corner. In the early years, you would find her at the local Bingo Hall or bowling, probably with a cocktail. Most notably she was known for cutting her own grass, right up until she had a walker and insisted it be done right. Cutting her grass, keeping her yard pristine, and spending time with her family and extended family was the joy of her life.

Surviving is her children, Debbie Griggs (Randy), Richard “Lamtree” Lanthier (Regina), Alice Hicks, and Tina English all of Marlboro County, SC; grandchildren Ross Brigman, Lonnie Hicks (Beth), Shane English (April), Crystal Wright (Chad), Joni Rowe (Shad), Rick Lanthier (Amber E.), Amber Lanthier and Katrina Brigman; step-grandchildren, Megan McDowell (Justin) and Nikki Griggs (Devin); 16 great grandchildren; her sister, Betty Chavis Reeves, and her precious four legged companion Allie.

She was preceded in death by her parents mentioned above, husband, Charles “Chuck” Lanthier of Lancaster, NY, brothers Hugh Chavis and Bryant Chavis of Bennettsville, SC, and half-brothers Thomas L. “T.L.” and Ronald Blackmon or Bennettsville, SC. Also, preceding her death was Gertrude Gray Musselwhite, an adopted special needs adult member of the family she cared for, also of Bennettsville, SC.

The family would like to especially thank Kindred-at-Home Health of Cheraw, SC for caring for her in home over the last year and Palmetto Transport Services of Bennettsville, SC for offering “No-charge” transport services when the family couldn’t take her to appointments.

The family will receive friends from 6:00PM – 8:00PM; Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Burroughs Funeral Home, Bennettsville, SC and other times after 12:00 PM at 1576 Chavis Cemetery Road, Bennettsville, SC 29512.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Friday, October 8, 2021 at Wallace True Gospel Emanuel Holiness Church in Wallace, SC. Entombment will be in Chavis Cemetery located in Chavistown, SC on Chavis Cemetery Road.
