Michael (Mike) Howard Skipper

Michael (Mike) Howard Skipper , 61, passed away February 16, 2022, at Scotland Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born December 28, 1960, in Laurinburg, NC, he was a son of James Howard and Hazel Hayes Skipper. Mike was a graduate of Bennettsville High School and attended Francis Marion College. Mike has loved sports since he was young. He played basketball in high school. He was a member of the Bennettsville High School Band where he played trumpet. He also served as the Drum Major where he was awarded the John Phillips Sousa Award. His love of speaking started at an early age when he announced the games for the Dixie Youth Baseball. He was a DJ for WBSC at the age of sixteen. He served as the public address announcer for the Marlboro County Bulldogs for thirty years. He worked for B.C. Moore’s in Management for many years. He worked at Pee Dee Outfitters for a few years.  He also worked several years at the American Red Cross in blood services and in Chapter. He was an avid sports fan for the USC Gamecocks, the Minnesota Vikings, and a huge NASCAR fan. Mike loved spending time with his family, traveling especially to Myrtle Beach and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mike loved people; he never met a stranger. Mike loved talking with people about his faith. Mike loved being a husband, father, and his greatest joy was being a papa!

Mike is survived by his wife, Melissa Evans Skipper of over 41 years; daughter, Mandi Wood (Josh) and son, Michael Evans Skipper; three grandchildren, Hayden, Kailey and Easton Wood; father and mother, James and Hazel Skipper; brother, Steven Skipper; and sisters, Susan Williams (Dairl) and Sandy Odom (Alexander); and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Marlboro County High School's McAlpine Stadium. A visitation will be held 5-7pm, Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Burroughs Funeral Home.

The family is requesting that everyone attending the service on Sunday wear black and gold, if possible.
