MANNING – Tommie Jane Heyward Compton, 78, formerly of Bennettsville, wife of Charles Stafford “Charlie” Compton, died Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at her home.
Born January 31, 1942, in Bennettsville, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas Heyward and the late Ruth Haithcock Heyward Griggs, and stepdaughter of the late Buck Griggs. She was the former owner and operator of Talk of the Town Restaurant in Bennettsville and she was a member of Bruton’s Fork Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Manning; three children, Billy Powell, Jr. of Chiefland, FL, Jeff Powell (Aylin) of Hanahan and Stephanie Dempsey (Pat) of Dorchester; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and eleven siblings; Carolyn Bethea, Kay Franks, Ronald Heyward, Donald Heyward, Butch Griggs, Lee Griggs, Wanda Bowen, Keith Griggs, Deana Beasley, Pam Mathis and Glenn Griggs.
In addition to her parents and stepfather, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Heyward.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the following: Brutons Fork Baptist Church, 1020 Bruton’s Fork Church Road, Bennettsville, SC 29512; Samaritans Purse Ministry, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; The Salvation Army; a local food bank; or a charity of one’s choice.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
